Homemade Glass Cleaner Recipe
This homemade Glass cleaner recipe is a great DIY to have in your repertoire. Getting sparkling windows and mirrors can be achieved easily with this DIY recipe, you do not need those toxic store-bought cleaners allowing you to save money with the added bonus of saving your families health.
Why avoid commercial window Cleaners

What a list hey!?! Having Fragrance on a list equals an immediate NO WAY and it could be anything…literally. Fragrance means chemical shitstorm protected by “trade secret”. No thank you. Ammonium Hydroxide (solution of ammonia in water) is another serious chemical of concern. It is rated by the EWG as an F, which is their highest concern rating, meaning it has potentially significant hazards to health or the environment. These include acute aquatic toxicity, respiratory effects and eye damage.
Most of the other chemicals listed also have health and environmental effects, or as in the case of Polyquart® Ampho 149 there is not enough information. If you need more convincing you can check out the other ingredients on the EWG website or using the Chemical Maze App.
Easily Remove “Sticky” Glue Resides
If your kids are anything like mine they like to use sticky tape and plaster their artwork all over the place. I try to encourage them to only stick tape on glass surfaces to try and save and painted walls (although they are totally disgusting after 8 years of kids anyway). Anyway back to the point, this homemade glass cleaner recipe easily removes the residue left behind by the sticky tape!! I think it works even better than straight Lemon essential oil alone. It makes it so effortless.

DIY Glass Cleaner
Get your windows and mirrors sparkling and streak-free with this simple DIY recipe
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups distilled (or cooled boiled) water
- 2 tbsp strong alcohol (60% or more)
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 2 drops lime essential oil
- 4 drops lemon essential oil
Instructions
- Combine the alcohol and water in a spray bottle and swirl to ensure the oils are solubilized into the alcohol (will prevent oils floating on the top of the mix)
- Add water and vinegar and shake well
Notes
- Strong alcohols are a solvent capable of dissolving oils and are can be useful for dispersing essential oils in water-based recipes. Although the effectiveness and stability of alcohol as a solubiliser varies depending on the properties of the essential oil being dissolved and the ratio of alcohol to water. We use Polmos Spirytus Rektyfikowany (95% Rectified Spirit) but we have also seen a 95% bio-ethanol that looks like it might be a good option too.
- When making homemade DIY recipes storage time depends is dependant on the potential for bacterial growth. For long-term storage use distilled water or boiled and then cooled water to limit the possibility of bacteria growth. If tap water is used the final product is suitable for temporary storage (1-2 weeks) only.
